Why join in the magic ?

STEPPS has produced a number of popular musicals during our thirty eight years as an amateur theatre group; The Sound of Music, Calamity Jane, Annie plus many more. Many cast members have grown up with us. The Vonn Trapp Children have long out grown their sailor uniforms and have moved on to adult roles. We no longer produce musicals as they tend to be very expensive to produce.

However, we always look forward to lots of fun and laughter as we rehearse and perform our annual pantomimes usually around about November. Quite often we are the first pantomime in the region and over the years have entertained numerous adults and children with old fashioned slapstick and lots of songs to clap and sing along to. A few years ago we began to write and perform short plays usually in June or July.

We all enjoy rehearsing and performing and found that the summer break between the musical and the pantomime season was too long so we came up with the idea of working on a non musical production. Many of our plays have been comedies. However a couple of years ago we performed Oliver Twist at Bondgate Church hall. The following year we performed Wuthering heights at the same venue.

Both were a great success and gave many of the cast a chance to venture out into some very serious acting plus try their hand at learning the art of stage fights. We have a very diverse group of people ranging from seven years old through to seventy plus. However we are a great team and work well together. STEPPS is open to anybody who wants to join us. No experience is necessary just a commitment to rehearsals and an ability to be part of a great team of people. For the last five years our Co producer and Co Director, Helen, writes our plays; some of which have been original scripts, Helen writes our wonderful pantomime scripts. As well as being a great writer she also accommodates everybody’s strengths and weaknesses allowing everybody to feel they play an important role. There is no such thing as, ‘Just a chorus member,’ in STEPPS everybody contributes to the performance, everybody is appreciated.

Like everybody else Covid effected us and we had to cancel all performances last year. However, after a two year gap STEPPS was back again in June with our summer play, Alice in Wonderland. We had great fun rehearsing and even more fun performing it. On Saturday afternoon we had, ‘Meet the cast.’ Many of the children gathered around the Mad Hatter’s tea party to chat with Alice, the, March Hare, the Queen of Hearts and all of Lewis Carroll’s amazing characters. We performed in St Anne’s Church hall which we adapted into a theatre for our three performances. Our next project which we are currently rehearsing is our annual pantomime.
